Although Ashton Athletic gave it their best shot, the involvement of our sides in this year’s Emirates FA Cup is now over. Tom Denton’s early goal for FC Halifax Town made it a difficult task for Ashton to muster a major upset against the National League North outfit. It was 3-0 at half-time, and Alex Simmons and Richard Peniket completed the scoring after the break. It wasn’t meant to be for Athletic, but their heads can be held up high.

In the Premier Division, 1874 Northwich were temporarily knocked off their perch at the summit after Atherton Collieries drew 1-1 at Irlam on Friday night. Brad Cooke seemed to have Colls on the road to victory, but Rick Peters’ late leveller for the hosts meant that both sides had to settle for a point.

1874 still had a job to do to reclaim top spot, and Sam Hind’s second half volley was enough for a hard fought three points from their trip to Hanley Town, who remain 8th.

Breathing down the necks of the leaders are West Didsbury & Chorlton, Bootle and Runcorn Town in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively.

West continued their fine form in front of goal with a 4-1 victory at home to a Barnton side now winless in their last seven league games. The pick of the bunch came from Ben Steer, with Joe Shaw, Ash Woods and Dan Clarke also finding the net for the hosts.

The goals all came in a ten minute spell at the end of the first-half for Joe Doran’s Bootle, with Ste Jones, Liam Loughlin and an own goal helping them to a 3-0 win at Padiham.

Runcorn Town also scored three times on Saturday, but they had to come from behind to beat an AFC Darwen side now hovering just above the drop zone. Craig Cairns cancelled out Kiel Lonsdale’s opener, and a brace from David Forbes ultimately proved the difference between the sides.

There was an impressive win for the other team from Runcorn on Saturday too, the in-form Linnets coming away from a tricky trip to Barnoldswick Town with a clean sheet and maximum points thanks to goals from Kyle Hamid and Mark Houghton.

Squires Gate are up to 10th after triumphing 3-1 at bottom side Cammell Laird 1907. Mark Buchan and Brett Dawson gave Danny Penswick’s side a two goal cushion, before a Neil Prince penalty gave Lairds hope. Another spot kick – this time from Gate’s Buchan – completed the scoring.

Congleton Town vs AFC Liverpool always looked a close match up, and it was the only draw in the division on Saturday. Despite Kieron Kenny giving Congleton the lead, Jason Carey and Francis Smith had the visitors in front with twelve minutes to play. However, the Bears were not to be denied their share of the spoils, and Michael Koral’s goal saw it finish 2-2.

Playing their first league game in September, Nathan Cotterell’s hat-trick turned it around for Winsford United at the Barton Stadium to move them up to 18th. Haydn Foulds had put New Mills into an 11th minute lead, but they remain 14th after this defeat.

The final game in the top tier of the Hallmark Security League for this weekend saw Maine Road pick up an important three points at home to Nelson. Ryan Steele got Road’s first, and Richard Williams clinched the win with fifteen minutes remaining.

Division One is headed by two Merseyside clubs – City of Liverpool and Litherland REMYCA – after both came away from trips to Cumbria with vital wins.

The Purples were 2-1 victors at 11th placed Holker Old Boys thanks to goals from Daniel Dalton and Francis Barry.

REMYCA, meanwhile, came away from Carlisle City with an excellent 3-1 victory, Colin Quirk’s double enough for the three points after Jordan Atkinson of Carlisle had cancelled out Niall Gannon’s opener.

3rd placed Alsager Town underlined their ambitions for an immediate return to the Premier Division with a very good win at a Prestwich Heys side who sit just outside the play-offs. Paul Taylor’s two goal salvo in the last 17 minutes proved decisive in this one.

Whitchurch Alport’s trip to Charnock Richard looked a contender for game of the weekend, and it didn’t disappoint. The hosts took an early 2-0 lead, but Daniel Tinsley’s hat-trick was the catalyst for an Alport turnaround, and the visitors leapfrog the hosts into 4th place.

Those two sides are now separated by Sandbach United, who moved up to 5th after a 5-1 victory at home to Ashton Town. Daniel Bartle grabbed two goals, with Josh Lane, Jamie Morgan and Nathan Jones scoring once. The only blot on the Sandbach copybook was Ethan Smith’s late consolation for Town.

In a clash of two sides relegated last season, Silsden climbed to 8th after dispatching of AFC Blackpool by five goals to two. Nicholas McNally, William Storrie, Chris Wademan all found the back of the net for the Cobbydalers, as did Ross Wilson on two occasions.

Widnes saw off the challenge of Atherton LR with a splendid 4-2 victory at Crilly Park. Thomas Mitchell, Ryan Malone, Neil Harvey and Kevin Towey each grabbed a goal apiece, meaning that Imande Favour’s double for the hosts ultimately counted for nothing.

Thabiso Magida struck with five minutes remaining to salvage a 1-1 draw for Cheadle Town at Chadderton, who had got themselves in front through Nicholas Alexander.

Daisy Hill were similarly grateful to Ashley Stott for converting a penalty on 70 minutes to earn a point against St Helens Town at New Sirs. Andrew Gillespie had twice given Town the lead, but they remain 18th after the hosts redressed that firstly through Jon Stephenson and then through Stott.

One game that certainly didn’t finish level was Stockport Town against Eccleshall, with four goals from Nathan Neequaye playing an important part in the biggest victory of the weekend: this one finished 7-1 to move the home side up to 12th and leave Eccleshall rooted to the foot of the table.

The last game for this weekend saw Callum Graybrook’s first half goal for FC Oswestry Town separate them and Bacup Borough - an important away win that moves Oswestry up to 13th.

It would be fitting to end this week’s roundup with a tribute to Daniel Wilkinson, who tragically died on Monday night playing for Shaw Lane Aquaforce. Over the past week, games in the Hallmark Security League have been preceded by a minute’s silence as a mark of respect, and the thoughts of the non-league family are with those closest to Daniel at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
