Alfie Visits 1874

After his previously planned visit to the Barton Stadium for 1874 Northwich's game against Congleton Town game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, Alfie Lund and his family will be coming to the game on Saturday against AFC Blackpool.
They will also be displaying part of their amazing football memorabilia collection.
Alfie unfortunately suffers from Mecp2 Duplication syndrome, a condition which means Alfie can’t walk or talk, has profound and multiple learning difficulties, epilepsy, is on the autistic spectrum and suffers chronic recurrent chest infections and pneumonia which are the main cause of death with almost half succumbing before the age of 25.
The Alfie Lund Fund was set up four years ago with the aim of raising funds for specialist equipment for Alfie and awareness of the condition, and helps the newly founded charity Mecp2 Duplication UK which helps support the 30 or so families now living with the disorder here in the UK.
An idea was needed to capture people’s imagination, and Alfie’s dad Mark and brother Cameron had a collection of about 200 football shirts, flags and scarves. They began wondering how far they would stretch if all joined together.
Since posting on Alfie’s Facebook page asking supporters if they could donate a scarf, shirt or flag, old or new donations have arrived from football supporters from all over the country and across the world from places like Australia, Germany, and Thailand sending items.
Supporters started to ask how they could see the chain and so came the idea to take the chain on tour to raise awareness.
Starting at their local park where Burscough Richmond were playing Dalton United in the West Lancashire League, the chain has visited many grounds at all levels of football as more and more items were collected, including at NWCFL Premier Division club Ashton Athletic.
The chain will be displayed for the last time at the end of the current season at Skelmersdale United where it will be measured on the pitch and hopefully a new world record will be set and submitted to the Guinness book of World Records.
Once the chain has been measured the plan is to sell off/auction as much of the chain as possible with all money raised going directly to Mecp2 Duplication UK, a charity run by parents and grandparents of children with the disorder and offers a place for families to turn to for support and financial assistance with therapy needs and support.
You might wonder what this will achieve for Mecp2 Duplication syndrome. Awareness is paramount.
This is such a rare condition that there are currently no doctors here in the UK who specialise in it. There are no designated places to go to for help or advice for newly diagnosed families and this can be a very lonely place.
