Advantage Colne – for now

There will be many twists and turns in the Premier Division promotion chase, but for now it’s Colne who have the advantage after the important 2-0 win over Runcorn Linnets at the XLCR Stadium on Saturday.

If Colne win all their games between now and the end of the season they will be champions – but with third placed Atherton Collieries still very much in the hunt, it will only take the Reds to drop points against Colls in the clash between the two sides on Tuesday night to blow the race wide open again.

A fascinating run in awaits us in the coming weeks.

Bears look menacing

Congleton Town continue to be the team bang in form at the moment, with Saturday’s 3-1 win at Cammell Laird 1907 continuing a run that sees them second in the Premier Division form table.

It’s now 13 games unbeaten for the Bears and six successive wins with only two goals conceded in those six games, proving that they have the ideal recipe for success, a water tight defence with the ability to score goals at the other end.

The run has come too late for them to have an impact on the promotion race, but no one will relish facing the Bears while they are in their current mood.

Cobbydalers keep fighting

Silsden’s position in the relegation zone of the Premier Division is precarious, but they gave themselves an important lifeline with their 3-1 win at Abbey Hey on Saturday.

It was only their second away win of the season, but with it moving them off the bottom of the table to within two points of safety, time will tell how crucial a win it was.

Another big game at home to fellow relegation candidates AFC Blackpool is next up for James Gill’s men, and a victory in that game could give them daylight between the drop zone and safety.

Hanley home in on promotion

There are certain days in a season when a team chasing promotion take a significant step towards their goal, and Saturday could turn out to a pivotal day in Hanley Town’s season.

In a close promotion race, running up your biggest win of the season against a team chasing a play-off place themselves is a great way to put a marker down, and Hanley’s 5-1 win over Holker Old Boys certainly sent out a signal that Hanley mean business.

Eight points are now needed from the last six games to ensure Premier Division football at the Abzorbed Arena next season, and it would take a brave man to bet against Dean Owen’s side.

A history making win for Whitchurch Alport

Amidst what has been a difficult first season in the NWCFL, there was some cheer for Whitchurch Alport with their 1-0 win at Atherton LR on Saturday.

The victory was only their second of the season, it ended a run of five straight defeats, and most notably was their first away win since joining the league last summer – so history made at last on the road.
