As we approach the climax of the season, each week brings more twists and turns in the promotion and relegation issues, and this weekend was no exception.

In the Premier Division, Colne struck a big psychological blow in the race at the top of the table, as they beat league leaders Runcorn Linnets 2-0 to move two points behind Linnets with a game in hand.

In front of a big crowd at the XCLR Stadium, Jason Hart struck both goals in the space of 15 minutes in the second half, and Colne can now go top of the table if they beat Atherton Collieries at home on Tuesday night.

1874 Northwich maintained their fourth place spot with a 2-0 win at Nelson, Craig Farnworth on target in each half, and Congleton Town continued their remarkable run of form with a 3-1 win at Cammell Laird 1907, which moves them into fifth place. Luke Shepton, Scott McGowan and Kieran Kenny were on target for the Bears.

Ashton Athletic staged an impressive comeback at home to Barnoldswick Town, after going two goals down inside 22 minutes. Goals from Sam Bailey, Daniel Smith and Paul Watson put them ahead by half time, and another goal from Luke Holden 15 minutes from time wrapped up a fine 4-2 win.

A goal from James McShane five minutes from time gave Runcorn Town a 1-0 win over Maine Road, and an 89th minute equaliser from Connor Belger rescued a point for AFC Liverpool in a 2-2 draw at home to Padiham.

Silsden’s hopes of avoiding relegation are very much alive after a fine 3-1 at Abbey Hey, with goals from Christopher Wademan, Daniel Forrest and Thomas Henderson in a 15 minute spell in the second half securing an important three points that moves them off the bottom of the table.

Squires Gate are still involved in a relegation battle after losing 2-0 at Winsford United, goals in each half from Ryan Mellor and Kyle Riley earning victory for the Blues.

The First Division promotion chase continues to provide drama and talking points, but it was a good afternoon for Hanley Town who consolidated their position at the top of the table with a 5-1 win over Holker Old Boys.

Jonathan Higham and Lassana Sidibe both scored twice for Hanley, whose lead at the top over Irlam is now five points.

Barnton are third after a goalless draw at Chadderton, and Stockport Town kept up their challenge in fourth place with a 2-0 win at Northwich Manchester Villa, Jake Pollard and Christopher Sherrington on target for Calum Sykes’s men.

Litherland REMYCA moved into fifth place after two second half goals from James McGrane helped them to a 3-1 win at Widnes, and Bacup Borough are now just four points off the final play off spot with games in hand on those above them after a 3-1 home win over Eccleshall.

Contender for game of the day was the derby clash between Ashton Town and St Helens Town, which eventually ended in a 4-4 draw. Andrew Gillespie appeared to have won the game for St Helens when he put them 4-3 ahead with two minutes to go, but a last minute equaliser from Neil Weaver earned a point for Ashton.

Whitchurch Alport celebrated only their second league win of the season when they beat Atherton LR 1-0 at Crilly Park, Tom Smith scoring the decisive goal in the 9th minute.
