Road's Manager Search Continues

Maine Road caretaker manager Derek Barber says the club are still on the lookout for someone to take over the first team managerial reins on a permanent basis.

Long serving Road stalwart Derek, who has retained his responsibilities as Club Secretary, took control of first team matters along with fellow stalwart Jeff Newman, when Lee Bennett left at the end of October.  However, Derek and his fellow committee members are continuing their search to find a manager who shares their aims of bringing young players through the ranks.

"We have always promoted our managers from within the club, but whether we can do that again in the near future, we doubt very much", said Derek.  "At the moment, there is no one involved who has the necessary experience, or the time available, to take on the job.

"That obviously means we have to bring in someone from outside, but if we have to get an outsider in, then we want to know what the outsider is like before we get them in.

"Now that might sound very picky, but we need to be sure that anyone coming in shares our philosophy of developing young players.

“Obviously if a future manager can bring with him some good experienced players to help the young ones, then that's fine.

"Before stepping up to the first team a couple of months ago, I was looking after the reserves, and we have a load of good young players in that squad.  There is no doubt that our second team this season is better than it was last season, and as a club we want to make sure that these players get the chance to come through and play first team football.

"I've never been afraid of throwing young players into our first team, and I'd want that to continue.  Developing our own young players and bringing them through is the only way we can go, as we don't have the big budgets some clubs have.

"It's a difficult job, to keep our club competing at the top end of the North West Counties Premier Division, as this is a good league, but we believe there will be someone out there who we can work with, and help us to keep giving opportunities to young players who come through the ranks".
