FA Vase 2nd Round - Glossop North End 3 Ryhope CW 0

After wins away from home by five and six goals in the last week, expectations are even higher for a flying Glossop North End team.

On Saturday they responded yet again, wearing down dogged North-Eastern resistance, and dealing with their first half own wastefulness in front of goal, to progress into round 3 of the FA Vase.

GNE started very brightly, forcing five corners in the first nine minutes and ought to have taken the lead in the 5th when the ball fell to Kieran Lugsden 6 yards out. Back to goal, but in the centre of the 6-yard box, his spun shot was lofted just too much and hit the bar, rebounding to safety.

Minutes later Martin Parker picked the ball up outside the area, cleverly changed feet and launched a shot that dipped just over the bar whilst Jason Carey headed a free kick just wide at the far post.

After the opening burst failed to elicit a goal, Ryhope gained some confidence to go forward themselves, and had Richard Hodgson picked out his overlapping full back rather than shoot from the edge of the area they might have had a clear run on goal. As it was, Hodgson’s shot was comfortably saved.

On the half hour Carey’s pace carved out a terrific chance, when he burst down the left and muscled his way into the area. The keeper saved Carey’s shot from a tight angle, but the rebound fell to Eddie Moran, 6 yards out, but he spooned the bouncing ball over the bar.

North End thought they had taken the lead on 54 minutes when Carey headed home Moran’s cross only to be thwarted by the offside flag, but the deadlock was finally broken in the 61st.

Moran was again the architect, delivering a teasing cross from the right which was met at the corner of the 6-yard box by Kieran Lugsden whose downward glancing header beat Barry Poskett.

Two minutes later the lead was doubled when Parker threaded a pinpoint angled ball through midfield for Carey to chase. Ryhope vainly shouted for offside as Carey sprinted into the box with the ball and drew Poskett towards him. Unselfishly he spotted Tom Bailey to his left and passed the ball on for Bailey to net into a virtually empty net.

Glossop continued to press but as time wore on Ryhope created a handful of chances that might have made it an anxious finish, however Jack Pounder’s spun shot went across the face of goal and Martin Metcalfe’s effort was deflected into the side netting.   They came closest though when Greg Hall let a free kick drift harmlessly wide, only to see it hit the post and set hearts fluttering.

North End always threatened though, and finally killed off any Ry-hopes in the 94th minute when Bailey got behind the defence. His shot was blocked, but landed back at his feet, and he laid the ball to Moran to tap in and seal the Hillmen’s progress.
