A goal from Chorley striker James Dean 18 minutes from time ended Glossop's hopes of progress in the FA Cup.

Until the goal, the Hillmen had looked a good bet for at least a draw, but Dean's downward header from Adam Mather's free kick bounced over Glossop keeper Greg Hall to clinch victory for the home side.

It was nonetheless a spirited performance from the Hillmen, who competed well throughout, although the home side created the better chances over the course of the 90 minutes.

Chorley signalled their intentions right from the start, and from the kick off created the first chance of the game inside 30 seconds, when Josh Hine broke free down the right and fired a shot across the face of goal.

Within 60 seconds Glossop had another let off when a defensive header landed in the path of James Dean on the edge of the box, but his snap shot just missed the target.

But Glossop hit back, and from their first attack of note Sam Hare finished a move with a low shot wide from 20 yards.

As the half wore on, all the goalmouth action was in and around the Glossop penalty area, although the Chorley efforts generally missed the target. Home striker Jack Lynch was the main culprit, shooting straight at Greg Hall from inside the box just after the half hour, before driving another effort wide after good work from Darren Stephenson and James Dean.

On the stroke of half time Glossop keeper Greg Hall made his first save of note from James Dean, the big striker striding through to collect a through ball from Dale Witham after slack Glossop play in midfield.

The opening stages of the second half produced little in the way of chances, but 10 minutes in Hall had to move smartly to tip a Dean header over the crossbar, and when Adam Mather swung in the resultant corner, Adam Roscoe headed just wide at the far post.

Just on the hour mark Glossop made a couple of chances, with Sam Hare setting up Tom Bailey for a long range volley, and then Hare himself tried his luck from 25 yards with an effort that just missed the far post with the keeper beaten.

But Glossop's resistance was broken 18 minutes from time when Chorley scored what proved to be the decisive goal.

A free kick conceded on the right hand side of the penalty area was swung in left footed by Adam Mather, and James Dean's downward header bounced high over the outstretched fingers of Greg Hall and into the net.

Chorley continued to press and Witham missed the target with a close range header, before home nerves were jangling in stoppage time when Glossop won a corner kick.

Goalkeeper Greg Hall joined his team mates in the penalty area with only midfielder Eddie Moran as defensive cover on the half way line, but when the corner was swung in, the ball was cleared upfield and a chase for the ball ensued between Moran and Chorley substitute Astley Mulholland.

With the pacy striker winning the contest, Moran hauled him down as he shaped to roll the ball into the empty net, and the referee had no hesitation in pulling out a red card.

Seconds later the final whistle sounded and Glossop's hopes of progress were over, but Glossop manager Chris Willcock praised his side afterwards.

"We had a game plan and the lads did exceptionally well with what I was asking them to do", he said.

"Chorley are a big side and dangerous from set pieces and that's what's undone us, unfortunately, although I thought it was a soft free kick. But they got the break and we didn't.

"In the first half we gave a good as we got, and it looked for a long time we would get a draw, but it was a great effort by the team. I'm proud of the players and we've had a good run

"I felt our retention of the ball in the second half allowed them to come on to us and we defended a bit too deep, but apart from that I can't fault the players' efforts.

"I always felt both ourselves and Runcorn Town would do the league proud, and I think we have done. Congratulations to Runcorn Town on their win, that is a terrific result for them".
