Stockport Georgians Manager and Chairman Andy Jenkins knows the club are in for a tough debut season in the NWCFL but is committed to honouring the legacy of his predecessor, Ged Newcombe.

Jenkins stepped into Chairing duties following Newcombe’s passing in November, at the age of 73, and the former Georgians player has admitted his pride at seeing the club starting a new chapter.

“We’re trying to maintain the legacy of those who are no longer here. It’s a shame they can’t see it but we’re trying to keep it going in honour of all the years of service they put in,” he began.

“I started playing for the club when I was 17 and I’m now 47. My nephew plays for the first team, my son plays in the reserves, one of my cousins is in the U18s, so this club means everything to me. But that’s what we’re about, making sure the majority of our players are from the local area and giving them a chance.”

Founded in 1908, the club was renamed St. George’s in 1923 after the church of the same name nearby. Following 56 years in the Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur League, the club absorbed Adswood Amateurs, taking their place in the Manchester Football League which they would go on to win in 1988, 2002 and most recently in 2015.

Jenkins was quick to say how the club’s application to join the NWCFL was in response to losing the bulk of a talented squad following that title win in 2015. The majority of which moved to clubs in the North West Counties.

“When we won the league in 2015, we had a really strong team. But they wanted to play at higher levels and we weren’t quite ready to take that step up at the time,” he continued.

“After that there was a lot of discussion on taking that next step and so we focused on bettering the facilities and work our way towards it.

“We’re just waiting on a grant from the Football Foundation so we can keep doing a bit more work around the ground but that’s all looking good. We’re having a pretty busy summer!”

The step up to the First Division South will see Georgians take on multiple clubs in the South Manchester area including Stockport Town, Wythenshawe Amateurs and Maine Road. And, while Jenkins sees no real rivalry between his side and those named, he’s excited at getting started.

“I think we may have shorter journeys than we did before, to be quite honest. This year, it’s all about getting the facilities right, holding our heads up and solidifying our spot in the league.

“We’ve got some very good players and we’re going to add to the numbers, there’s far more games to compete in now so the squad needs to be big enough.

“We’re buzzing to get started and feel prepared but ask me again at the end of November!”
