FA Vase Quarter Final Draw

Mon 14th February 2022 | FA Challenge Vase
By Martin Fallon

UPDATE:

Wythenshawe Town face another away day in the Buildbase FA Vase as they look to reach the Semi Final of the competition, with Loughborough Students standing in their way on the Road to Wembley.

As mentioned in the preview earlier, Loughborough have beaten Sandbach United and and Abbey Hey in their run so far, so it is possibly the best possible tie for Wythenshawe given that they can get some information on their opponents. It won't be easy though, with Loughborough scoring seven without reply against our clubs in those two meetings.

The ties will be played on Saturday 12th March, with Wythenshawe's league game at Barnoldswick Town now postponed.

Winning clubs will receive £4,125 with losing clubs getting £1,350.

Draw in Full

Whitchurch Alport v Newport Pagnell Town
Loughborough Students v Wythenshawe Town
Littlehampton Town v North Shields
Hamworthy United v Southall

ORIGINAL 12.00:

Today sees the draw for the Quarter Final of the Buildbase FA Vase, with Wythenshawe Town flying the flag for the NWCFL.

It is the second successive year that we have had a sides in the Quarter Finals, with Warrington Rylands facing a Hebburn side that had won the delayed 2020 Vase at Wembley just a week earlier. The shortest Vase reign in history was then set at a week as Rylands won 1-0, and they then beat Walsall Wood in the Semi's to reach the Final, taking place during Non-League Finals Day at Wembley Stadium in May 2021. A hat-trick from Elliott Nevitt, only the second in a Final in the 37 years of the competition, saw Rylands lift the trophy with a 3-2 win over Binfield.

This season, the Vase truly becomes a national competition at the Quarter Finals stage, with the regionalisation of previous rounds now a thing of the past. Nationalisation can throw up some truly memorable journey's, none more so that the 2000/01 Fourth Round draw that saw Bedlington Terriers of the Northern League drawn against Western League side Falmouth. That's a trip of 480 miles, which is the official longest journey in any FA competition in history (FA Cup/Trophy/Vase) since it all began back in 1872. To put it into context, its almost 100 miles further than Carlisle United to Plymouth Argyle, which is 388 miles.

Once again the draw will be made live on talkSPORT2 radio on 'The Social' show at around 3.15pm this afternoon. You can listen online via this link.

So who can Wythenshawe Town get in the this afternoon's draw, and what numbers are each team? Lets have a look. For a start, Wythenshawe Town are Ball 4 this time around, and this is their best ever run in the competition.

Ball 1 - Whitchurch Alport

A team who need no introduction having been members of the NWCFL from 2015/16 until last summer, when they were laterally moved to the Midland Football League Premier Division. They are currently 7th in the league, with 13 wins from 23 league games, and games in hand on most teams above them. They have lost just two of their last 14 games in all competitions. This is currently their best ever run in the FA Vase.

Whitchurch had to do it the hard way to reach the Quarter Finals on Saturday after overcoming Coventry Sphinx. They shared goals in the opening 15 minutes before giving away a penalty and having George Carpenter sent off. Sphinx converted the penalty and added another before the break, but Alport came back to draw 3-3 before winning 4-3 from the penalty spot.Ba

Ball 2 - North Shields

The 2014/15 FA Vase winners who beat our very own Glossop North End in the Final. That run came out of nowhere, with North Shields never progressing beyond the First Round Proper in 14 Vase seasons before that. Since that Wembley victory, they reached the Fourth Round the season after but this is the best they have done since. Shields sit in 4th place in the Northern League, with games in hand on the three teams above them.

They had a pretty comfortable 2-0 win against Rugby Town on Saturday to reach the Quarter Finals in front of a packed crowd of 1,039. Chris McDonad gave them an early lead with Dan Wilson making sure of the win with 17 minutes remaining.

Ball 3 - Loughborough Students

Loughborough play in the United Counties League Premier Division North and currently sit in 5th place in the league table. They were previously known as Loughborough University until this season, and have played in 13 previous Vase campaigns, never getting past the Second Round until now.

They are a side that seemingly like playing NWCFL opposition! They beat Sandbach United 4-0 in the Third Round, with Ethan O'Toole and Olusanya Faduhansi scoring two each. On Saturday they beat Abbey Hey 3-0, Tope Fadahunsi and O`Toole scoring in the first half before Matt Bowman added a penalty early in the second half.

Ball 5 - Southall

It's the club where Les Ferdinand started his career! West London side Southall play in the Combined Counties League Premier Division North, and are in 6th place in the table. They do have up to seven games in hand on those above them and would comfortably go second with a few wins. Southall have reached the FA Vase Final before, losing 3-0 to Halesowen Town in 1985/86. More recently, they reached the Quarter Finals in 2016/17.

They reached the Quarter Finals after a tight affair on Saturday, drawing 0-0 with Stansfeld before winning 4-2 from the penalty spot. They are just 17 miles from Wembley Stadium. More importantly though, just two more wins from playing there!

Ball 6 - Hamworthy United

Hamworthy, which is a suburb of Poole in Dorset, play in the Wessex League Premier Division. They are looking good for promotion this season, sitting second in their league, two points off the leaders with three games in hand. They have lost just once in the league. In the Vase, this is new ground for them having previously reached a club best of the Fourth Round, that in the 2018/19 season.

They reached the Quarter Finals with a comfortable 3-1 win over Tunbridge Wells on Saturday in front of a crowd of 661. Bailey Rowe was the hero for the home side, hitting a hat-trick inside 50 minutes to send the home fans wild, with Wells scoring a consolation two minutes into stoppage time.

Ball 7 - Littlehampton Town

Littlehampton play in the Southern Combination Premier Division, and they are currently top of the league, four points clear with a game in hand. They have reached the Semi Finals in the past, losing both legs to Gresley Rovers in 1990/91. This is the best they have done since then.

On Saturday, they were involved in a thrilling game with Brockenhurst in front of the day's record Vase gate of 1,276. Star striker Joe Benn put them ahead on 16 minutes with Brock levelling on the stroke of half time. Aaron Cappin put them ahead on the hour and with 20 minutes left they made it 3-1 through Lee Garnham. Brock pulled one back with 14 minutes remaining and then levelled in the SIXTH minute of stoppage time. The Marigolds composed themselves though, scoring all four penalties to progress after Brock had missed two of theirs.

Ball 8 - Newport Pagnell Town

Like our very own Charnock Richard, Newport Pagnell are better known for their motorway services! They play in the United Counties League Premier Division South and are third in the table, but ten points behind the second placed team. In the FA Vase, they have reached the Quarter Finals once before, losing 6-1 to eventual winners South Shields in 2016/17.

They had the crowd behind them on Saturday with a club record 1,186 fans watching against Buckland Athletic. It was a tight affair with Buckland opening the scoring midway through the half only for Alfie Powell to equalise in stoppage time to force a 1-1 draw! Despite missing two penalties in the shootout, their opponents missed three, with Newport progressing 3-2 from the spot.
