What a great way to kick-off the New Year within the NWCFL - with all 60 sides in action, plenty of goals and the usual thrills and spills.

The weekend kicked off in style on Friday evening when Bootle hosted Squires and what a game indeed. 177 in attendance saw 10 goals share in favour of Joe Doran's side 7-3 - certain value for money!

In the NWCFL Premier Division on Saturday, the league leaders 1874 Northwich narrowly defeated Litherland REMYCA 1-0 thanks to a first-half Lee Jackson goal.

Whilst Avro won by the same scoreline against Congleton, Charnock Richard collected all three points against Irlam and Hanley and Northwich Victoria shared the spoils - splitting four goals at Abbey Lane.

An 8-goal thriller at Longridge Town saw the home side defeat Winsford United 5-3, Ethan Kershaw grabbing a brace on the way to their first win for two weeks.

Meanwhile, Barnoldswick Town moved nine points clear of the drop zone with a slender 1-0 win away at Rylands, whilst Skelmersdale United defeat Padiham 3-2 in a tight affair at the bottom end of the table and Runcorn Town cruised to a 3-0 away win at Whitchurch Alport - with 214 spectators watching on.

Lastly, Ashton Athletic and Burcough's game was abandoned in the second half due to an injury to George Lomax and we wish him all the best in his recovery.

Elsewhere in NWCFL First Division North, leaders Lower Breck suffered an away 2-0 defeat to Shelley who moved up to ninth in the standings.

Chadderton hit Cleator Moor Celtic for 7 without reply to narrow the gap on those above, whilst AFC Darwen ended the weekend eighth following a tight 1-0 win against AFC Liverpool.

Bottom side Steeton, second side Bacup Borough and third-bottom Garstang all won, 5-1, 2-0 and 2-0 respective against St Helens Town, Ashton Town and Nelson to all narrow the gap to safety on an incredible day for the bottom sides.

An injury-time Conor Glavin goal came to the rescue for Emley AFC as they snatched a late winner against Holker Old Boys winning 3-2, meanwhile, Pilkington Town defeated Atherton LR 3-1 and Prestwich Heys narrowly won 1-0 versus Golcar United.

Lastly, a Daniel Ashburner second-half goal separated AFC Darwen and AFC Liverpool as the home side defeated Chris Anderson's second-place side.

In the NWCFL First Division South, leaders Vauxhall Motors came from behind to collect all three points against Abbey Hey wining 2-1, whilst second place FC Oswestry Town suffered a 3-2 defeat at home against Wythenshawe Amateurs.

St Martins made it two games undefeated with a 4-1 away win at Abbey Hulton United in their quest to escape relegation, whilst West Didsbury & Chorlton beat Alsager Town 2-1 and Cheadle Town defeated Sandbach United by a single goal - 1-0.

Eccleshall took advantage of Abbey Heys slip up with a 2-0 win over Cheadle Heath Nomads to edge closer to the fourth promotion place.

Meanwhile, Ellesmere Rangers lost 2-1 to Wythenshawe Town, New Mills collected all three points defeating Barnton 1-0 and Stockport Town's resurgence continued - a 4-1 win against Cammell Laird 1907 leaves them eighth in the standings.

And, Maine Road are now ninth following a 2-0 win at Stone Old Alleynians.

We do not have to wait long for the NWCFL action to return, as, on Monday, there is one game in the Premier Division with Whitchurch Alport hosting Skelmersdale United on the first of four consecutive nights of games.
