In this series of articles, we have looked at the major County Cups which are available for NWCFL member clubs to compete in. In addition to these County Cups, we see a couple of County District Cups for which NWCFL sides regularly compete – often successfully.

The first of these is the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup based around that part of Cheshire which may be described as Vale Royal. Vale Royal was a short-lived local government district with borough status coming into being in 1974 and lasting until 2009 when the current Cheshire West and Chester unitary authority was formed.

In effect, this competition is administered by the Mid Cheshire District FA, which is a division of the Cheshire County FA, and is just one of several trophies competed for throughout each season.

We regularly see member clubs 1874 Northwich, Barnton, Northwich Victoria and Winsford United compete alongside Witton Albion of the Northern Premier League.

Available information suggests that this trophy was first won by Winsford United in the 1921/22 season. Since then Northwich Victoria have lifted the trophy on 26 occasions and, indeed are the current holders.

The trophy features the standard lion mark indicating purity alongside a leopard’s head placing the place of assay in London. The date mark is that for 1934 and that fits stylistically if we study the form of the trophy.

The maker’s mark is described as CB over & over S which is the mark for Charles Boyton and Sons Ltd of London. The third generation Charles Boyton set up his own business in the heart of fashionable London and was known for some striking Art Deco designs.

Of recent times we have seen some intense local rivalries played out in this competition and some very tight results.

The 2016 final saw 1874 Northwich triumph by 3 goals to nil over Witton Albion to provide the club with their first County Cup trophy.

In 2017, a single goal by Scott McGowan was enough to give 1874 Northwich victory over Northwich Victoria to retain the trophy.

In 2018 it was Witton Albion who took the honours after a narrow 1-0 victory over Winsford United.

The most recent final, in 2019, saw Northwich Victoria triumph over Winsford United on penalties after the match finished level at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

This season we see the usual five-team format with a match between Barnton and Winsford United. The winners of this match join 1874 Northwich, Northwich Victoria and Witton Albion in the semi-finals.

Our thanks go to Northwich Victoria for supplying the photograph above of the rather stylish trophy.
