LR Retain The Goldline Trophy

Atherton LR have retained the Goldline Trophy after winning a penalty shoot out against Charnock Richard in the final at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on Tuesday night.
The competition, which involves semi-pro and amateur sides from the Bolton area, is one that LR have a good record in over the years, but this season's triumph was not one of their best.  The general feeling in both camps was that the West Lancashire League side were unlucky to lose out after having the better of a game that ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.
In the subsequent penalty shoot out. Charnock Richard had their first attempt well saved by Martin Pearson, and Daniel Smith converted the Atherton response.  Charnock Richard fared better with their second penalty and put the ball beyond Martin Pearson while LR's Mark Prince had his penalty saved. Martin Pearson pulled off a fine save to deny Charnock their third attempt, while Jake Patton despatched Atherton's next penalty.
Charnock's fourth spot kick was equally well driven into the net and Chris Lawton responded in similar fashion for LR. Charnock's fifth attempt was successful, which left Lee Marsden to successfully convert the last kick to give LR a win by 4-3 on penalties.
LR's match reporter Eddie Taylor said:Â "Of the two sides Charnock Richard created the greater opportunities, but finishing let them down, and they can consider themselves unfortunate not to be lifting the cup. They did win the man of the match award through Damian Dashti which goes some way to reflecting their dominance of the game".
That opinion was echoed by LR manager Dave Hughes in his post match summary. "Tonight I don't know if we were poor or just outplayed. We got muscled out in the first period and in the second half rode our luck a bit. We had chances near the end when the game stretched and on ninety minutes we were a tad lucky to still be in it at 0-0, but we hung in and on penalties we were cool.
"Daniel Smith played up front after missing a few games and Mark Prince has come back. Jim McMullen was ill all through the game and I am not making excuses, but we had players who were below par in terms of fitness. The performance was not good and we have got away with it".
