As April draws to a close there is still plenty to play for, as Irlam and Hanley Town continue to battle for the top spot after both confirmed Premier Division football next season following last weekend’s victories.

Barnton and Stockport Town have wrapped up 3rd and 4th place respectively while at least five clubs continue to contest the two remaining play-off places with just two points separating St Helens Town in 5th and Bacup Borough in 9th in what promises to be a pivotal weekend.

Division One leaders Irlam travel to Atherton LR’s Crilly Park with both teams playing their final league game of the campaign.

Irlam are already assured of promotion to the top flight and a win will take them one step closer to the title while maintaining the pressure on second placed Hanley Town.  LR enter the game on a run of nine defeats while Irlam mirror their hosts form with nine successive victories which have taken them to promotion.

The two teams met at Silver Street at the start of April when Steve Nixon’s side ran out 3-0 winners

Fellow title contenders Hanley Town are also on their travels with a trip to Chadderton.

They will be hoping to put the disappointment of their midweek defeat at Irlam behind them knowing that success in their remaining games in hand will see them clinch the title.

Chadderton will be buoyed by their 3-0 home victory over in-form Eccleshall on Wednesday evening and will be hoping to improve on their previous two meetings with Hanley Town so far this season.

They lost 2-0 at the Abzorbed Arena in the corresponding league encounter earlier this month, while their opponents also progressed to the semi-final of the Reusch First Division Cup with a 2-1 win.

While it’s unlikely that Ashton Town will make the play-offs, they could have a major say in who does; starting with the first of two meetings in five days with Bacup Borough.

Midweek saw Town suffer a 3-0 defeat at Barnton while Bacup were also on the end of a 4-0 loss at fellow play-off hopefuls St Helens Town.  Games in hand may be the key for Brent Peters’ side but they will need to maintain the pressure with a win at Edge Green Street, before the two teams meet again next Wednesday at Cowtoot Lane.

Already assured of a third place finish and guaranteed home tie in the play-off semi-finals Barnton welcome St Helens Town to Townfield.

The visitors arrive in good form with a record breaking win last Saturday as Whitchurch Alport were put to the sword (10-0) and this was followed by an impressive 4-0 home win over Bacup in midweek.

Barnton, unbeaten in thirteen league games, will be looking to finish their league campaign on a high and victory would see them record a fourth win in five recent outings.  The two teams met a Brocstedes Park back in September when two very late goals saw the visitors rescue a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Cheadle Town meet Daisy Hill at New Sirs, knowing a win could potentially take them back in the play-off places at this late stage of the season.

The Park Road outfit recorded a fine 3-0 win over Northwich Manchester Villa last time out which ended a run of three games without a win while Daisy Hill’s recent good form (2 wins and 2 draws) ended with a 3-0 loss at Stockport Town last weekend.

The opening month of the season saw the two sides meet at Park Road, where Cheadle Town ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

The big games keep coming, as sixth place Holker Old Boys and seventh place Litherland REMYCA meet at Litherland Sports Park with the home side playing their final league game of the season, knowing that a win is a must if they are going to have a chance of taking play-off spot.

Defeat would end Remy’s chances for this season but would see Holker take a firm grip on a place in the top six.  It was mixed results in midweek for the two sides, with Litherland’s Colin McDonald hitting four of his side’s goals in a 6-1 win over Atherton LR while the Old Boys lost 4-1 at Bacup Borough on Monday night.

Northwich Manchester Villa’s disappointing end to the season continued last Saturday as Holker Old Boys ran out 6-0 winners at Rakesmoor Lane.

Villa’s final home game of the season sees them host Rochdale Town, and they will be looking to avoid a sixth successive defeat; a run which has also seen them fail to score.  Rochdale will be hoping to continue their recent good form which includes a 3-0 home win over Villa earlier this month.

A tough debut season comes to an end for Whitchurch Alport, as they host high flying Stockport Town who have already secured a play-off spot.

The Yockings Park home support will be hoping their side can put on a battling performance to finish the season after last weekend’s heavy defeat at St Helens.

Alport will be much the wiser for their experiences in Division One this season but they will be aware that Stockport Town will offer no favour as they look to end their league campaign on a high.

The Lions won the corresponding league fixture 4-1 at Lambeth Grove last October but a surprise home win on Saturday could see Alport leap-frog Atherton LR and finish the season off the bottom of the First Division table.

Widnes host Eccleshall at the Select Security Stadium in what is the final game of the season for both clubs.

The visitors will be hoping to get back to winning ways after a 3-0 midweek loss at Chadderton, while Widnes will be looking to bring down the curtain on their season with a fourth successive win after victories over Rochdale, Ashton Town and Atherton LR in the last three weeks.

Eccleshall will be looking to gain revenge for the 0-5 defeat handed out by Widnes at the Adverc Stadium in mid-March.
