Thursday Football And New Kit For Town
Wed 20th April 2016 | St Helens Town | By Ian Templeman
Following the news last week that St Helens Town will be returning to their home town next season, the club has announced two more changes for 2016-17.
Town will be returning to their traditional blue and white kit for the start of next season, having last worn the colours back in 2000 during their final season at their old Hoghton Road ground.
The change to the current red and white colours coincided with the establishment of the partnership with St Helens RLFC at Knowsley Road, but the new start at their new location at Ruskin, as well as 2016-17 seeing the club celebrate 70 years since its reformation after the Second World War, prompted club officials to make the change.
Club Chairman John McKiernan said: "Town teams wore blue and white from the early days in the late 1940s through to the start of the new millennium, and we felt that it was the right time to revert back following a period as 'reds'.
"We were granted permission in 2014 to use the official St Helens Borough crest as part of the club's identity, and we are proud it now adorns club kits as well as being utilised in our programme, website and social media.
"We are still to decide on a final kit design but are planning on having the kit available to launch over the summer break".
The club is also making plans to play their North West Counties Football League home midweek fixtures at Ruskin Drive on Thursday evenings which would be another break from tradition.
John added: "There are a number of reasons for our decision, but all are aimed at increasing attendances and creating interest in the club.
"There is plenty of competition, especially from television, and we feel that moving to a Thursday evening would reduce this, and will hopefully encourage a few extra supporters through the turnstiles".
