Colls Host Remembrance Day Commemoration

Atherton Collieries played host to the start of the annual Remembrance Day procession through Atherton last Sunday.
The procession traditionally started from the Formby Hall, next door to the Colls ground, but this year saw a change in arrangements, as Colls Secretary Emil Anderson explained.
“Following the recent closure of the Formby Hall, the organisers of the Atherton Remembrance Day proceedings were left looking for an alternative place to start the annual walk to the Cenotaph”, said Emil.
“The football club put its name forward to fill the gap and was given the great honour to be chosen. Being next door to the Formby Hall must have counted in the club's favour.
“Atherton Collieries FC are proud of Atherton and endeavour to be an integral part of the community, and Committee man Ricky Brown placed a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the club.
“We were genuinely touched when we were given the privilege to be host for the 250 or so walkers, many of whom returned from the Cenotaph to be provided with tea, coffee and biscuits as well as the odd pint.
“We sold another batch of 100 Colls Poppy badges and could definitely have sold more. All profits from the sale have gone to the Royal British Legion Appeal fund.
“We would like to place on record our thanks to the Council's Remembrance Day Organising Committee, along with the local members of the RBL”.
