In a weekend that had just about everything, the league action has provided plenty of talking points, whilst the FA Vase heralded success stories for many of our sides in their Second Qualifying Round ties.

The most obvious place to start is with West Didsbury & Chorlton, who have earned national recognition after their 15 (fifteen)-1 win at home to step 7 outfit Dinnington Town, with nine different West scorers!

There was also a big win for Silsden, earning a 6-0 win against Division One Daisy Hill. Christopher Wademan’s hat-trick as well as a Nicholas McNally double and a William Storrie goal helped the Cobbydalers into the First Round proper.

There were a pair of 6-2 wins for sides in all NWCFL encounters: on Friday night in front of a healthy crowd of 429, Atherton Collieries came out on top in the ‘Flat Cap Derby’ against Laburnum Rovers (Ben Hardcastle and Matt Boland both on the score sheet twice), whilst Rochdale Town overcame Division One rivals St Helens Town at Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday.

Braces from Johnny Thompson and Scott Alfrey played a key part in Rochdale’s third win against St Helens already this season.

The next big winners were Runcorn Town, who defeated First Division leaders Barnton at Pavilions by four goals to one. Paul Shanley continued his productive season in front of goal with a double, a feat also achieved in the same game by Warren Bellew.

Northwich Manchester Villa are also safely through after a 3-1 win against Northern Counties East League outfit Rossington Main. Yousif Yousif scored twice and John Grant once to help Villa to their first ever FA Vase win.

There were two all Premier Division FA Vase clashes. Despite their lowly league position, Alsager Town continued their good cup form with a 3-1 win against fellow strugglers Maine Road. Jordan Johnson (twice) and Jordan Southwell helped the Bullets through.

The other tie produced an away win at Squires Gate, with mid-table Winsford United’s James Rothwell and Danny Hudson ensuring a losing start for new Gate manager Danny Penswick.

Narrow away wins for two Premier Division sides who have already had success in the FA Cup this season (both reaching the Second Qualifying Round) took the number of NWCFL sides who won their ties up to ten.

A pair of doubles from Scott McGowan and Declan Fletcher saw Congleton Town complete a remarkable turnaround at Northern Counties East League side AFC Emley in a 4-3 victory for the Bears, who were losing 3-1 with fifteen minutes left.

Abbey Hey also won 3-2 on the road, seeing off the challenge of West Cheshire League Division One leaders Vauxhall Motors. They were trailing 2-1 at half-time, but Sam Hind’s brace and Bradley Robinson’s goal ultimately proved enough.

There was heartbreak for three of our sides, who lost after their games were level after 90 minutes. Goals from Nick Hepple and Conor Gaul looked to be sending AFC Darwen into the next round, but a late West Auckland Town equaliser took the game to extra-time. Town then won 4-2.

It took penalties to separate Eccleshall and West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division side Haughmond at Pershall Park, but unfortunately Steve Lloyd’s side couldn’t win in a shootout for the second week running.

Nelson were eliminated by Northern League Division Two outfit Team Northumbria, losing 3-1 after extra time.

The Admirals’ local rivals Barnoldswick Town were also knocked out, losing 3-0 at Northern League Division One outfit Newton Aycliffe.

Fellow Premier Division high-flyers Bootle were defeated 2-1 at Northern Counties East League Division One side Dronfield Town, Tom Peterson’s late goal merely a consolation for Joe Doran’s side.

NCEL sides also knocked out three of our First Division sides. Ashton Town couldn’t transfer their promising league form into this competition, losing 3-2 at Armthorpe Welfare, who lie one level above Town on the pyramid. That was despite Daniel Griffiths and Marcus Cusani putting the visitors into a two goal half-time lead.

Similarly, Cheadle Town faced a visit to a higher-ranked side in the form of Handsworth Parramore, and had a two goal lead at the break thanks to Thabiso Magida and Christopher Sherrington. However, a second half comeback by the hosts, including a late winner by Stephen Warne, sentenced them to an early exit.

NCEL Division One side Hemsworth Miners Welfare secured their second win against a NWCFL side in the FA Vase this season, winning 1-0 at in-form Bacup Borough on this occasion.

Sadly, the biggest losers from our league were Holker Old Boys, who succumbed to a 7-1 defeat at Northern League Division One side Bishop Auckland. The only consolation for the Old Boys is that most sides would have struggled to contain a striker in the form that Fred Woodhouse was in, as he scored six of the hosts’ seven goals!

The league schedule this weekend was reduced as a result of the FA Vase action, but we still managed to see 24 goals in four Premier Division games, and 14 in three Division One games.

Colne began the day with an unbeaten league record, and topped the table at the start of play. However, they were on the end of a 4-0 defeat at Cammell Laird 1907. Jamie Henders’ penalty on his return to Lairds gave them a half-time lead, and Craig Cairns scored a hat-trick in the last eight minutes – a better goalscoring rate than that of Sergio Aguero’s five goals in twenty minutes on Saturday! That moved the hosts up to 7th, with the visitors dropping to 2nd.

They were replaced at the summit by Runcorn Linnets, who made it three wins in a week by beating Ashton Athletic 3-0 at Brocstedes Park, thus gaining revenge for their earlier 1-0 defeat by Athletic at the Millbank Linnets Stadium. Kyle Hamid’s double was separated by Jason Carey’s first goal for Linnets. The home side Athletic dropped to 9th.

The highest scoring league game came at the Barton Stadium, where 1874 Northwich beat Padiham 5-4. 1874 climbed to 4th, with Matt Beadle and Ryan Jackson scoring twice and Stuart Wellstead getting his second goal since joining from Runcorn Town.

Keiron Pickup’s brace, and goals by Alex Ralph and Curtis Haley counted for little in the end for the visitors, who dropped a place to 15th.

Saturday’s other league game between AFC Liverpool and AFC Blackpool saw the hosts bounce back emphatically following a run of eight league games without a win. They defeated Stuart Parker’s side 7-1.

Francis Barry and Steven Jones continued their strong starts in front of goal with two goals apiece, with Ryan Cox, Joshua Percell and Jordan Evason helping the Reds up to 13th. Despite Richard Seear’s late goal, AFC Blackpool drop to 18th.

Equally exciting was the First Division! League new-boys Stockport Town demonstrated once again that they belong at this level, moving into 2nd after a 4-1 win at home to Whitchurch Alport (Alport also joined the NWCFL at the start of this season).

Nathan Neequaye’s opener was followed by another by Luke Podmore and a double by Ruben Abreu, before Alport responded through Josh Ruane. The visitors’ search for a first league win continues as they remain 16th.

In a top of the table clash, Hanley Town climbed above Litherland REMYCA to 5th after a 2-0 win at Litherland Sports Park; Theo Stair’s early penalty set the tone for the afternoon and Josh Thorpe settled the game midway through the second half. REMY drop to 6th.

The highest scoring Division One game of the weekend saw Chadderton edge past Widnes by four goals to three at Andrew Street. It was a game of twists and turns, as Dillan O’Connor and James Curley put Chaddy into a 2-0 lead.

By the break Ronnie McCarthy, Daniel Lomax and Luke Edwards had the visitors in front. However, the home side were to eventually gain three points to move up to 7th, thanks to another Curley goal and a late winner by Gareth Morris. The visitors remain 14th.

Results this weekend confirm the unpredictability of the league. Could this be the crucial week in Runcorn Linnets season, with their win lifting them to the top for the first time? Can Stockport Town continue their excellent form? Can we have another side who reach Wembley this season in the FA Vase after Glossop North End last time out? Answers to be revealed shortly.
