With many of our Premier Division sides involved in FA Carlsberg Vase action this weekend, we have just four League matches to look forward to, but each of them promises some excellent action.

League leaders Colne travel to Merseyside where Cammell Laird 1907 are the hosts. The Red Army have had a great September in the League, with their side having won five matches since the 1-1 draw against Abbey Hey at the beginning of the month. The only blot on the copybook came with a reverse in the Emirates FA Cup at Northern League outfit Consett.

Striker Danny Boyle leads the Premier Division goalscoring chart with Jason Hart and Spencer Jordan not far behind. Colne are the only unbeaten side remaining in Premier Division matches, and they will be anxious to continue that into the third month of the season.

Cammell Laird 1907 currently lie in mid table and that’s a fair reflection of their season so far. 25 goals from 12 League matches is a good return and particularly so as the strikes are coming from all over the field. Lairds will need to move on from the midweek reverse at Runcorn Linnets and be at their best to get anything from this match.

Second placed Runcorn Linnets travel to Brocstedes Park to face 7th placed Ashton Athletic. That 4-0 win at home to Lairds in midweek represents a continuation of some excellent form this season for Linnets. Four matches in the Emirates FA Cup means that they have had a pretty busy start to the season, and have registered some notable wins in September with the only League loss coming in the home match against Atherton Collieries.

The Yellows started the season well with two wins, one of which was against their opponents on Saturday, but League momentum was interrupted by draws and then replays in both the Emirates FA Cup and the FA Carlsberg Vase. Three wins from the last four League matches represents a good return to form but that will certainly be tested on Saturday.

1874 Northwich enjoyed a welcome, if narrow, victory over a resurgent Runcorn Town in midweek to record their first League victory of September. 1874 have yet to hit the form of last season which saw them riding high in the League for most of the campaign, but they are a good side to watch and the confidence from that midweek win should stand them in good stead.

Padiham are the visitors to the Barton Stadium this weekend and come into this match after a somewhat enigmatic return to the NWCFL. Some excellent wins amongst a few disappointing losses sums up the season so far for the Storks. Goals are pretty much guaranteed when Steve Wilkes side takes to the pitch it’s just never certain who will score them!

Our final match sees a battle between two “AFCs” as AFC Blackpool visit the Marine Travel Arena in Crosby to take on AFC Liverpool. The hosts started the season in great style being undefeated in the month of August with goals a plenty from Ryan Cox and the returning Steve Jones.

Since the start of September they have returned just two points from the six League matches played and must be wondering where the next victory will come from. With former manager Paul Moore looking on from his new role as Director of Football, newly appointed manager Joe Gibbons will be working to bring in his own ideas and footballing philosophy.

The Mechanics are another side experiencing a topsy-turvy season. Two victories in the Emirates FA Cup, including a notable scalp in Evo-Stik One North side Ossett Town, were probably the highlights of a slightly disappointing season so far. Two recent League victories have helped but 17th is not a comfortable League position even with games in hand over most of the other sides in the division.

As ever, plenty to look forward to this Saturday as the weather continues to be kind to us. Wherever you watch your football this weekend – enjoy the match.
