Ashton Town have this week opened their doors to people suffering from dementia, as part of a new initiative run in conjunction with Wigan Council.

Town have been accredited with "Dementia friendly" status and will open the club house twice weekly, on Monday and Friday between 11am to 1pm for dementia sufferers and their carers.

Monday's sessions are predominantly coffee mornings, whilst Friday's will be activity days with anything from sing alongs, reading, and gardening to simply reminiscence with sport or Ashton in general. There is also no booking needed, just a case or people turning up on the day.

Ashton Town Chairman Mark Hayes said: "As a club we are continuing to build within the community, and this is something that means a hell of a lot to me personally.

"My Grandma passed away after living her latter years with Dementia and it was very hard to watch and deal with. You learn from every life experience though and I am made up to be able to provide this.  We have taken steps for all volunteers at the club to become Dementia trained.

"The days are open very importantly to the carers too, giving them time to relax and talk to other carers within a safe and managed environment, and all sessions are free. We will also provide free tea's and coffee's and some cold refreshments".
