One Game At A Time For 1874

Despite his side’s good start to the season, 1874 Northwich manager Ian Street is playing down any talk of his side being title contenders.

The Greens recorded their fourth straight win since the start of the season at Atherton Collieries on Saturday, but Ian says he is just focussing on keeping the run going, and at the same time looking to progress in cup competitions to help raise the club’s profile.

“We just have to keep plodding along and using the old clichés like taking each game as it comes”, he said. “You can’t keep looking too far ahead.

“I’d be lying if I said I don’t think we can win the league, everyone should have desire to win the league or do as well as they can. Whether they are realistic hopes, that’s another thing”.

None the less, there’s no doubt that 1874 are looking good and Ian admits that the win on Saturday was a good one.

“The game at Colls was a big game for us. We didn’t really know what to expect from Colls apart from we knew they would be a hard working team and knew they would be up for it.

“We started well and did well for 20-25 minutes but seemed to go away from the game plan, and we went behind to a great goal.

“Fair play to their lad, he drifted inside and curled it into the top corner, you don’t mind conceding goals like that, and it is the first one we’ve conceded this season.

“But we changed it slightly at half time, I felt confident we could turn it around, and I was really pleased with the win”.

As well as league success, Ian is also looking at cup competitions to help raise the profile of the club, and after a Friday night FA Cup win against West Didsbury & Chorlton that attracted the BBC Sport cameras, 1874 now face Maltby Main in the Preliminary Round this coming Saturday.

It’s a game that Ian believes is key to the club’s progress.

“We need to raise the profile of the club, we are still young, so we have to spread the word to those who are not aware of us, and that is what success in the FA competitions allows you to do”, he said.

“We are trying to get as far as we can in both FA competitions, as financially it would be good for us. Our priority as a club is to get our own ground, so any success in cups will go into the kitty and go towards that”.

Winning the FA Cup tie against West Didsbury on a Friday night, and with the draw for the next round already made, it meant that Ian could go and watch the future opponents the next day, with Ashton Athletic taking on Maltby Main at Brocstedes Park.

The Yorkshire side progressed through after a replay, and will make the trip to the Barton Stadium on Saturday to provide what Ian believes will be a tough test.

“They are a strong side, Maltby Main, physically strong with some big lads who like to get the ball forward quickly”, he said.

“It will be a tough game but of course it is winnable, every cup tie at this stage is a winnable game for us, so hopefully we can progress”.
