Five Things We Learned At The Weekend - w/e Saturday 22nd August 2015

Another interesting programme of action in the NWCFL at the weekend - here's five things we learned.

It ain't over until it's over for Silsden...

Several results were affected by late goals in games. most notably at the Wood Park Stadium, where Alsager Town led 1-0 against Silsden going into the 90th minute, only for the visitors to pinch the points with goals from Chris Wademan and Zack Dale before the final whistle, clinching a 2-1 win. Future opponents of the Cobbydalers will surely have taken note.

...and Linnets rediscover the late goal touch

On several occasions last season Runcorn Linnets were masters of conjuring up late goals at crucial times to collect vital points, and they picked up the theme again on Saturday with Mikey White's last minute penalty securing a 2-1 win over Maine Road. Once again, Linnets look like a side who will be a tough nut to crack, especially at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

Hanley Town back in the groove

After losing out in the Division One play off final last season, Hanley Town were tipped by many to challenge again this season. After the setback of losing at home to Stockport Town on the opening day, Town have bounced back with four straight wins, scoring 11 goals in the process, and are starting to look like serious promotion candidates once again.

NWCFL football appeals to the locals in Whitchurch

Whitchurch Alport look to have a growing local support for their inaugural season in the league. Their home gate of 152 on Saturday for the game against Chadderton was bettered only by Atherton Collieries, Colne and Runcorn Linnets, proof indeed - if any was needed - that the FA's decision to allow them to join the NWCFL family was a good one.

1874 defence is not impenetrable after all

It took three full games and 36 minutes before 1874 Northwich conceded their first goal of the season, and it took an outstanding strike from Atherton Collieries' Mark Truffas to finally breach the previously watertight defence. It took a cracking 25 yarder into the top corner of the net from the Colls man to beat 1874 netminder Matt Conkie - but his side scored three without reply in the second half to win 3-1.
