AFC Liverpool Looking Good

With seventeen goals scored in their opening four games, AFC Liverpool have sent out a message that they have the necessary firepower at their disposal to pose a threat to anyone in the Premier Division this season.
But, as manager Paul Moore explained, during the close season the focus was very much on strengthening the squad defensively.
“We have got goals in the side so I didn't have to go looking for goalscorers”, he said. “That doesn't mean I'm going to stop looking, I'm out every night watching games.
“But the areas we needed to tighten up were in defence, and that is not being disrespectful to the lads we had in last year.
“It was important to get the right people in, collectively from a defensive point of view that's what I was looking for and I feel I have done that.
“It's a new season, and with new players coming in there's always going to be some trial and error, but hopefully we will be stronger than last season”.
The indications so far are that the close season activity is already paying off, and Paul is looking for the good form to continue.
“My ambitions are to finish as high as we can in the league and definitely higher than we did last season”, he said.
“I am looking to improve on that and I would also like to target a decent cup run or two as well. It's going to be a tough league this year but I don't see that being any different to other years.
“Our lads can play, they just have to have that bit more belief. At this level of football, if you have the lads believing in themselves, they will give themselves a better chance, especially when you have the movement and firepower that we have.
“Ryan Cox has been among the goals since he has been with us, Steve Jones has popped up at Chadderton and scored five goals and Franny Barry has been on the scoresheet as well.
“We've still got a long way to go, but the word to sum up what I’m looking for is competitive, the lads know that I want to be competitive. And I want to compete not just in the league, but in the cups too”.
Having played one cup tie so far, an FA Cup tie which they won 9-2 at Chadderton, Paul’s players certainly seem to have taken his words on board, and as well as being delighted with the performance, he is now looking forward to a tie against Radcliffe Borough from the Evo-Stik League a week on Satuday
"We had a game plan (at Chadderton) and started off on the right footing, doing all the things I knew we were capable of”, said Paul.
"On our day we are a match for anyone and it was just unfortunate for Chadderton that they caught us on a very good day.
“It's a nice tie to have (against Radcliffe Borough), as we often get drawn against other North West Counties sides in the FA competitions. It's a change of scene in that it is different opposition from a different league and hopefully we can do the League proud.
“We'd like a run ourselves, and while it's a good game for us it will also be a good game for them. We'll get them watched, as they will probably do on us, but we have league games before that so we will worry about them before the FA Cup comes around”.
