Silsden's Junior Football Club Committee have put a bid in for a grant of £25,000 from the Aviva Community Fund.

The club has passed the first stage of the process, and is now looking for support through online voting to support their bid.

At present, the Juniors have teams between the ages of 5 and 18, a mixture of girls, boys, and mixed teams. Their main source of fund raising is the annual six-a side competition in June which attracts over 100 teams and over 2,500 spectators from across the North of England.

The club has two standard size pitches and four smaller pitches with a “paddock” for training purposes, which is now floodlit thanks to the hard work of the Committee.

However, with such large numbers, many of the teams have to train on rented all-weather pitches in the winter.

On a recent visit, the Minister of Sport, Helen Grant, said that it was one of the best junior set-ups she had visited under the wings of a very professionally run senior cup.

The club's Commercial Manager, Barry Thomas, has worked tirelessly to improve the facilities for the Juniors and the aim is to give them a base of their own, hence the reason they are launching bid for money from the Aviva Community Fund.

Barry said: “As a Charter Standard Community Club we take very seriously our commitment to provide a sporting facility for people in our surrounding area. We aim to provide the best possible playing surfaces and training areas that we can, from the funds we raise. These funds come from bag packs & car washes etc. to our annual 6-a-side weekend.

“Access is always open to the grounds 24/7 for anyone wishing to partake in sport, exercise or just walking or jogging around our fields. We also want to attract more junior sports and encourage other groups to use our facility, along with the Majorettes, Scouts, and Fitness groups using us now.”

“Currently we attract 240 young people to our junior set up. However, given our area, there must be hundreds more young people whom we should be able to attract and get them involved in sports and outdoor activities”.

“The Juniors would greatly appreciate any support for the bid. It only takes a few minutes to give your support. We have got past the first stage of the bidding process, the Club's application having been approved by a panel of adjudicators. We now enter a voting stage and need to come first or second in the count to achieve our goal”.
