Winsford United have announced the introduction of a new Under 21's development squad.
The Under 21's sees the start of a new five year youth development plan put into place by newly appointed Youth Development Officer Chris Appleton, a former youth team manager at Witton Albion, who will also manage the Under 21 squad.
Winsford United Secretary Bob Astles said: "This is something we have been planning as part of becoming a Charter Standard Club. We are also aware that there are three thriving Junior Leagues in Winsford but when player reach the age of seventeen there are few options open to them.
"Traditionally most of our squads in recent seasons have been made up of players from out of the area, and so we look on this as way of getting more local players involved.
"We are hoping to develop it so there is a complete integration between the junior leagues and the senior club. To that end we would hope to have and Under-18s team if not next season then the season after".
Chris Appleton explained that the aim of the new squad is to not only build for the future, but create a platform for youth football in the local area, and offer a route into senior football for local youngsters.
“There is a rich wealth of youth football in Winsford but a lack of opportunities to progress the youngsters into adult football and we have built this plan to offer this” said, Chris Appleton.
"This plan will look to include Ladies, as well as men's football and we look to work in close partnership with the current Winsford United Colts set up".
There is an information meeting set for the end of the month at Winsford United's, Barton Stadium and anyone interested in attending, training with the 21's or playing a part should make contact with Chris Appleton via e-mail at ChrisAppleton.WinsfordUnitedFC@gmail.com.
