Ashton Athletic under 16's continued the club's good record in county competitions in recent years, when they won the Lancashire FA Under 16's Youth Cup at the County Ground in Leyland on Sunday.

Goals from Jamie Charnock and Harry Johnson earned the young Yellows a 2-0 win over Britannia AFC, a victory that sees them lift an LFA trophy for the second year in succession, after their triumph in the Under 15s Cup last season.

A big travelling party of club committee men, management and supporters travelled to Leyland for the game, and among the group were the three joint managers of the first team, Jay Foulds, Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts.

Jay said that everyone at the club is delighted at the progress the team has made.

"When Ben, Dougie and myself took over at Ashton Athletic nearly two years ago we were well aware of the great youth set up at the club", he said.

"There was plenty of success last season and that has continued with our under 16's who are starting where they left off last season.

"Manager Brad Reid who has had the side from under 7's works tirelessly, and his dedication to the side has produced one of - if not the most - successful junior sides the club has ever had.

"We spent Sunday with the squad and club officials.  We all met up for a breakfast before travelling in style on the ex England cricket coach to the County Ground at Leyland.

"Straight from the kick off, the young Yellows dominated proceedings and it wasn't long before Jamie Charnock robbed the centre back and poked the ball under the advancing keeper.

"The score line was doubled soon after, when a cross from the right reached Dion Johnson, and his scuffed shot fell nicely to Harry Johnson who made no mistake firing past the keeper.

"The second half saw little in goal mouth action as the young Yellows soaked up pressure and attacked on the counter. The back line was marshalled excellently by Scott Lawrence. With time running out Britannia pushed men forward but failed to really test Matty Shorrocks in the Ashton goal.

"When the final whistle blew, skipper Matty Reid lifted the trophy and confirmed the talented young side as the best team in Lancashire for the second year running.

"It's a great achievement for the club and everyone involved".
