Glossop North End’s recent run of good form in cup competitions ended at the hands of Evo-Stik League side Matlock Town in a hard fought game at Surrey Street.

Two goals in as many minutes in the first half put the visitors in control, and although Kieran Lugsden scored a terrific goal in the second half to reduce the deficit, the visitors held on for victory.

Glossop manager Chris Willcock resisted the temptation to rest any players in advance of Saturday’s FA Vase quarter final, and a full strength starting eleven soon found themselves in a battle with determined opponents who set their stall out early in the game.

Matlock finally broke the deadlock on 34 minutes, when Jamie McDonough put them ahead from the penalty spot, and they doubled their advantage with two minutes with a fine goal from Niall McManus, who after winning possession broke into the box before finishing with a low shot.

The score was unchanged until 14 minutes from time, when Kieran Lugsden fired in a goal of the season contender to give Glossop a lifeline, but Matlock held on to secure a place in the final.

Glossop North End Press Officer Jonathan Haggart said: “In the first half Matlock were really up for it. They were sharp in the tackle and probably deserved to be ahead.

“In the second half we looked the better side and passed the ball well, but despite getting a goal back we just couldn’t make another breakthrough”.
