County Cup Success For The Bucks

Bootle manager Joe Doran praised his side after they clinched a place in the semi-final of the Liverpool County FA Senior Cup, courtesy of a 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers at the Delta Taxis Stadium.

It's the second season in a row that Bootle have seen off professional opponents in the competition, after beating Everton on penalties last season, and Joe said afterwards he was delighted with the performance.

"The lads had to work hard tonight on a difficult pitch”, he said.  “They showed great determination and some quality play at times to get the result".

Bootle took the lead on 32 minutes when Jamie Hay headed down into the path of Tom Peterson, who finished from close range.

Tranmere equalised just after half time through George Donnelly, and Bootle then weathered a fifteen minute period of pressure from an experienced Tranmere side, fielding six players that were involved in the FA Cup game with Swansea City last weekend.

But with the prospect of penalties looming, some positive play down the right hand side resulted in Peterson getting his second of the game and his 15th of the season to clinch a memorable victory for the Bucks.

"I was really disappointed to concede the goal so early after half time" said Joe.  "It was sloppy play in the midfield, we gave it away and they broke on us quickly.

“Jack Mano performed brilliantly in goal on the night and made three exceptional saves, so conceding that goal which gave him no chance was disappointing.

"The lads can be proud of themselves. It is no mean feat to beat full time professional footballers, and this game can go a long way in the development of some of our younger players who have only made a handful of appearances".
