Division One Preview

Five games take place in Division One on Saturday, with the clubs in action looking to get points in the bag and move up the table while their rivals are occupied on FA Vase business.

Cammell Laird 1907 will move to the top of the table if they emerge with a win from their game at Cheadle Town. Lairds have been in good form of late, beating Runcorn Linnets in the Men United cup last week, before hitting Barnton for six in their midweek visit to Cheshire.

Cheadle meanwhile are on a run which has seen them win just once in their last seven games, although goalscoring has not been a problem for them, with their 3-0 defeat at Irlam last week being the first time they have failed to score in a game since early September.

Litherland REMYCA host an Atherton LR side who will move into 4th place ahead of Hanley Town if they collect all three points from the visit to Merseyside. However, LR have won just twice on the road so far this season, and will face a REMYCA side starting to show a bit of form under new boss Phil Stafford.

If recent results are anything to go by, the Select Security Stadium should see no shortage of goals when Widnes host Rochdale Town. In the space of the last week Widnes have won two cup ties on penalty shoot outs after 4-4 and 3-3 draws against higher league opponents in St Helens Town and Prescot Cables.

Roll in the fact that the clubs drew 4-4 at the Mayfield Sports Centre last month in the reverse fixture, and anything less than a goalfest will seem like a serious let down. Rochdale will move into a play off place if they win.

In the remaining two games, the visiting clubs will be looking to bounce back from heavy midweek defeats. Irlam came desperately close to causing an upset at Winsford United in the Men United Cup last week, and they will be looking to get back to winning ways against Wigan Robin Park, who have shipped 12 goals in their last two games.

Northwich Flixton Villa, whose scheduled midweek game against Litherland REMYCA was postponed a few minutes before kick off due to an electrical failure at Valley Road, will hopefully have all the batteries recharged for the visit of Barnton.
