The main focus was on cup action at the weekend, with 32 clubs involved in 2nd Round ties in the Men United Cup.

Game of the day was at the Select Security Stadium, where Widnes and St Helens Town ended the afternoon tied at 4-4, with Widnes winning the resultant penalty shoot out. It was a result few would have envisaged at half time with the Saints 4-1 up, but a spirited Widnes fight back in the second half led to Alex Davies grabbing a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time.

The tie was one of four that went to a penalty shoot out. In a thriller at the AM Property Group Stadium, Ashton Town and West Didsbury shared six goals, with West eventually winning the shoot out 5-4, and the other two games finished 1-1.

A last minute own goal saved Glossop at home to AFC Blackpool before they went on to win on penalties, and at Hanley Town it was the visitors Rochdale Town who emerged victorious, converting all five of their spot kicks.

One of the more eye catching results of the day was at the MBS Stadium where Cammell Laird 1907 beat Premier Division league leaders Runcorn Linnets 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Craig Cairns after just two minutes.

A number of clubs recorded impressive away wins, most notably Atherton Collieries who won 3-0 at Ashton Athletic, with Ben Hardcastle, Mark Battersby and Jordan Cover on target for Colls. No less impressive were Runcorn Town, who won 4-1 at Congleton Town after going a goal down in the 5th minute.

Goals from Ryan Mitchell, Lee Duckworth and Daley Woods saw 1874 Northwich take a three goals lead inside 19 minutes at Barnoldswick, although the home side staged a fightback before eventually losing 3-2.

Jack Sowerby's 12th goal of the season helped Squires Gate to a 3-1 win at Nelson, and in an entertaining game at Daisy Hill, two goals from Michael Blundell contributed to a 3-2 win for Alsager Town.

Abbey Hey, winners of the competition in 2010, beat last season's finalists Maine Raod 2-0 at the Abbey Stadium, and there was heartbreak for Irlam at the Barton Stadium when a Brian Matthews penalty on 87 minutes and a last minute winner from Alex Byrne snatched a 2-1 win for Winsford United.

Elsewhere Bootle won 2-0 at Oldham Boro, and Colne emerged with a 1-0 win at Silsden in the derby clash at the Angel Telecom Stadium, where the draw for the next round was made after the game.

There were four games in Division One, with a hat trick from Yusef Yusef helping Northwich Flixton Villa to a 5-0 win at Wigan Robin Park and the other three games all ended in home wins.

Joel Igenosa's 19th minute goal gave Atherton LR the points against Holker Old Boys, and Jake Ellis's goal a minute after the break ensured Barnton collected all three points against Litherland REMYCA.

Matthew Russell, Adam Turner and Niall Sultan were all on target for Chadderton in the 3-0 home win over Eccleshall.
