League Focus Begins For Town

After Saturday's defeat in the FA Cup to Norton United, Runcorn Town manager Simon Burton is now looking for his side to transfer the form they have shown in FA competitions to the league campaign.
Eye catching wins both home and away against opponents from higher leagues have given the club some memorable moments so far this season, but as Simon explained, he believes the results have come at a cost.
“The cup runs have knocked the stuffing out of us a little bit”, he said. “When we have played well against the likes of Goole, Witton Albion and Barrow and then going into league games, it's as if we are struggling to transfer those highs into the league, and it’s been tough to get going.
“You hear Premiership managers talking about a Champions League hangover and we have suffered in the same way in the league. In that sense, the FA Cup has really cost us.
“Would I have changed anything? No I wouldn't, because the game against Norton gave us a great chance to progress again. It's been a great run, and now that we are out of the FA Cup, it's up to us to pick our form up and start getting points on the board.
“We have got a group of lads who are more than capable of getting results, especially when their backs are against the wall and no one expects us to get a result, but we’ve come to league games when we would be odds on favourites to win it, and we’ve been beaten.
“That's something we have to change, and make sure that complacency doesn't creep in, because the lads can’t think they are going to win a game without having to work hard for it”.
In the meantime, Simon has no doubts that his squad can be heading back up the league table once they start catching up on the backlog of league games.
“I've got no concerns at all about the league, as I know I have players who are capable and we can turn things around”, he said.
“The cup runs have knocked us a bit in the sense that we've not been able to get consistency going in the league, with the number of games we've had in the FA competitions when we have been playing every other week.
“I don't see any reason why we can't get into the top six by Christmas. We've always been up there and we'll be looking at bringing in a couple of players that will hopefully make a difference”.
