Wigan Robin Park Secretary John 'Taffy' Roberts has been presented with an Order of Merit Award for 30 years service to grassroots football from the Lancashire FA.

Taffy's footballing career has spanned both Wales and England, and has seen him hold a variety of positions at both league and club level.

Having played semi professional football in North Wales, Taffy crossed the border in the late 1970's.

He both played for and managed St Cuthbert's in the Wigan Amateur League, and when he called time on his club career in the late 80's he took up refereeing, only to have a promising career cut devastatingly short by a serious road accident.

Undeterred, Taffy continued his involvement in football by joinng the South Lancs Counties League as the Referee Appointments Secretary and at the same time was also a key member of the Wigan Referees Society committee.

In 2003 Taffy changed his allegiances to Saturday football, joining the executive and ultimately becoming Chairman of the Wigan Amateur League where he also had a stint as acting Treasurer.

Today, Taffy remains Club Secretary of Wigan Robin Park and is a well known and highly respected figure in local football.
