Liverpool Senior Cup holders Bootle lost their grip on the trophy after a defeat to a strong Tranmere Rovers Reserve side at Prenton Park on Monday evening.

Having won the competition last season, Bootle were in a position to retain the trophy this time around but were beaten by a Tranmere Rovers Reserve side that contained four players who were part of the League One sides first team squad at the weekend.

Goals in either half from James Rowe and Abdulai Baggie gave the home side victory and the trophy. However, Bootle put up a good performance against their full time opponents. The game could have taken a different direction had striker Daniel O`Connor not had a point blank range shot saved by Rovers goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom in the first minute of the match.

Joe Doran, Manager of Bootle, said after the game: "First and foremost, I am immensely proud of the way the lads worked tonight. In the first fifteen minutes we started brightly and had chances and had the first minute chance gone in, it could have changed the whole game. After that, the game was a little scrappy and they were a bit physical. One bit of quality gave them the lead and they took their chances which was the difference between the two sides.

"Despite the result, it has been a great evening and I am proud that the lads have got as far as they have done."
