New Chief Executive Appointed At Nelson

Nelson Football Club have announced the appointment of Dave Edler as their new Chief Executive with immediate effect.

Edler (pictured left) has previously held a similar position at Conference National side Bath City, and last season was Business Development Manager at the Admirals near neighbours Bacup Borough FC.

Edler reacted to the news by first paying tribute to his former club.

“I would first like to put on record how much I have enjoyed the past year at Bacup Borough FC. It has been a pleasure to work with such a passionate football man as Brent Peters and I wish the club and its supporters well with their exciting new re-brand this season, which should generate a lot of interest and enthusiasm for them locally. I will certainly try and get to see them whenever time allows.

He continued: “It is a pleasure and an honour to be appointed as Chief Executive of a club with the rich history that Nelson FC has. The term ‘sleeping giant’ is often banded about in football with little justification, but there is no doubt that Nelson can genuinely lay claim to that tag.

“We are talking about a team that has beaten Real Madrid and Manchester United away in the same season and a club that has achieved positive results in league matches against six current Barclays Premiership sides. Nobody in the Conference National can claim a record like that, let alone at step six.

“We are not talking ancient history here, there are still people alive that saw Nelson play in the Football League in 1931. However, there is no doubt that for pretty much the last 50 years the club has fallen on lean times. Valiant attempts have been made to correct the slide, most recently when the side won promotion along with FC United in 2005/6.

“Sadly on that occasion it proved to be a false dawn and the club finds itself back in the First Division of the North West Counties League having dropped out of senior football altogether for a year.

“The reason that I accepted this challenge is because I can see in the Chairman and Manager the same enthusiasm that I share for getting this once proud club back to its rightful place in football. They want the town of Nelson and its surrounding areas to be proud of its town team once again, and to come out in numbers to support it rather than having to head in other directions to watch good football.

“They have not only stabilized the club financially, but have developed a relationship with Accrington & Rossendale College that provides state of the art facilities that very few clubs in our league can match. The new full time Youth Scholarship scheme is also an important step forward as is the Galaxy League Development Squad. As for Victoria Park, it is already one of the best playing surfaces in the league and one of the most picturesque grounds, and a lovely place to watch football”.

Edler ended by saying: “I am not saying that Rome will be built in a day, that is about as likely as I am to stop using clichés!! However what I will say to supporters and potential sponsors is that all the necessary elements are now in place to take this club forward at a reasonably rapid pace towards reclaiming its former glories.

“We will be exploiting the clubs rich past more than has been done previously because we want to build on the work done by Sky Sports last season in highlighting our unique achievements to a wider public. We will be introducing many new initiatives to reach out to both the local business community and to supporters old and new.

“A ‘meet the manager and board’ event will be arranged very shortly to outline some of those initial plans. This season will be a tough one in the First Division with three strong new sides coming in along with Champions that couldn’t go up, so there is no doubt that we are going to have to work hard to progress.

“However, I have every faith in the way that Mark Fell is going about his business and I am confident that his approach will quickly reap dividends. It is up to me now to help the club generate the funds that can help us to progress even faster”.

Manager Mark Fell also welcomed the move: “This is a fantastic appointment for the football club. Dave shares the ambition of myself and the board and brings with him skills and attributes that the club are fortunate to be able to draw upon.

"The appointment of a Chief Executive is critical to the growth of our club, giving me a platform to continue my creation of a Nelson side that can start to climb the pyramid”.
