Ashton Town Chairman Mark Hayes has issued the following statement regarding his club's expulsion from the First Division Trophy Final.

"The error was an innocent mistake from the club’s management committee, who wrongly informed manager John Brownrigg that he could play a player, who had in fact already represented another club earlier in the competition.

“Yesterday was without doubt my darkest day as Club Chairman, and with being at the helm I cannot apologise enough to John, his staff, his players, and our fans. I am so, so sorry.

“Behind the scenes, I have been working tirelessly on developing the club, and I can assure all that mistakes like this will never be made again.

“I can announce with immediate effect that John Bithell, currently with Wigan amateur side Martland Mill, joins us as our new club secretary. Steve Barratt will take up a sole role as club treasurer, whilst Stefan Ochwat will continue as our match day and club registrations secretary.

“What I believe, though, is that what hurts us makes us stronger, and for as long as I am wanted, I will take this club, with the help of others, on an amazing journey.

“What John Brownrigg, his backroom staff, and players have done this season has been nothing short of magical. To transform a club who last term finished rock bottom, to become promotion contenders and win the club’s first trophy for 42 years, is an unbelievable feat for which they should be extremely proud.

“In John Brownrigg I have no doubts we have a manager whom can take this club, along with myself, to places that before were only dreamt about. We must now group together and deservedly finish in third place in the division which is still in our own hands, and then go on to celebrate what has been achieved in this first season from this very, very special group of talented players”.
